Josh Seelan makes his Arsenal vs Tottenham bets and predictions for the upcoming Premier League match on Sunday 24th September.
The North London derby is the crowning jewel of this week’s fixtures as Spurs only have to travel four miles as they take on their bitter rivals, Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium. Spurs and Arsenal are both on 13 points and sitting second and fourth in the table respectively. A win here for either team would be crucial in terms of moral and in the long-term race for a place in the top four.
Last time out, Spurs came back from 1-0 down to win 2-1 vs Sheffield United. With 12 minutes of added time left, they scored in the 98th and 100th minute with a goal and an assist from super sub Richarlison. Anyone who watched the game knows that Spurs deserved that win, but you have to feel sorry for the Sheffield United fans who thought their team had earned a much needed three points.
Arsenal also squeezed out a win against a team near the relegation zone as they went north to Merseyside to take on Everton. Although only winning 1-0, Arsenal deserved the victory and probably should’ve scored more. Gabriel Martinelli’s first half injury gave Leandro Trossard the opportunity to play and he took full advantage of it with a superb goal in the second half.
Let’s take a look at Sundays matchup and other odds for the game between these North London rivals.
Arsenal vs Tottenham Hotspur Odds
Moneyline: Arsenal -143, Draw +320, Tottenham +320
Both Teams to Score: Yes -188, No +137
Double Chance: Arsenal or Draw -450, Draw or Tottenham +110, Arsenal or Tottenham -450
Total Goals: Over 2.5 -188, Under 2.5 +150
The last time these two sides faced, Arsenal came out victorious on both occasions, so it makes sense to see the books open up with the home team as favorites. They haven’t lost to Spurs at home since 2017.
What’s interesting is the opening price of Spurs. It’s a big price considering how well they’ve started the season. Under new manager Ange Postecoglou, they sit second in xG (expected goals) per 90 minutes with 2.32 xG. After five games, they sit top of the table in terms of shots per game. This is a different Tottenham team.
‘Six pointers’ are often talked about towards the bottom of the table at the end of the season. Implying that a game is so crucial that the three points that you’d get for the win are worth double because of who you’re playing and where they sit in the league. Although it’s only Week 6, the same can be applied here. This is a six-pointer game. Local rivals, second vs fourth, it doesn’t get better than this for a neutral.
Tottenham Hotspur vs Arsenal Preview
Date: Saturday 16th September
Time: 10:00 AM EST
Location: Emirates Stadium, London
This will be the first North London derby without Harry Kane who left for Bayern Munich in the summer transfer window. It highlights the start of a new era for Tottenham, one that they fans and players alike have accepted with open arms.
The arrival of Ange Postecoglou as manager has breathed confidence into this Tottenham side. The style of football that he wants to implement is attacking and exciting to watch, something that we’ve not necessarily seen from Tottenham on a consistent basis in the past.
With the arrivals of Destiny Udogie, James Maddison and Manor Solomon, this Spurs team is starting to look stacked in all positions. Their newest addition, Brennan Johnson from from Nottingham Forrest replaced captain Son Heung-Min in the last game and looked electric when he came on. He was unlucky to have a goal ruled out due to offside, but the kid is going to have a bright future and will look to break into this Spurs team.
Arsenal looked like they’ve picked up where they left off last year and will only get better as the season goes on. Mikel Arteta has a lot of pieces to play with this year as Arsenal splashed the cash this summer. Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus will be looking to earn a place in the starting XI and will have every opportunity to do so with Arsenals busy fixture list coming up.
The battle in midfield will be crucial this game. Arsenal new boy Declan Rice will come head-to-head with Yves Bissouma who’s had a resurgence of form under Postecoglou and looks like Ngolo Kante 2.0. Both players like to dominate possession and knock the ball around, averaging over 70 passes a game. The key in this game will be who can displace and disturb their counterpart and give their team the edge.
The midfield battle doesn’t stop there as two magicians also face off in Martin Odegaard and James Maddison. Both playmakers will be essential if either team is going to come out victorious. Their creativity will play a big part in this game as both teams boast stout defenses with Arsenal and Spurs only conceding four and five goals this season.
Tottenham Hotspur vs Arsenal Predictions and Picks
Tottenham or Draw
This is a conservative pick, the risktakers amongst you may be tempted by Spurs straight up to win at those odds. Like I said before, this is a different Tottenham team. They’re playing really exciting football; they’re peppering teams with shots and they’re finding ways to win games. I don’t think this is as easy of a win for Arsenal as people think. Arsenal are playing mid-week vs Dutch side PSV in the Champions League, there’s a chance that there’s some tired legs out there when Sunday comes around.
Tottenham are capable of winning or at least drawing this game, worth taking, especially at plus money.
Anytime Goalscorer
Everyone loves to hate Richarlison, but you can’t ignore his contribution last game vs Sheffield United. He came on with 10 minutes left of regular time. Grabbing a goal and an assist with all the criticism he’s received lately is impressive. Some players need to build a bit of momentum, so they hit their stride with their form, Richarlison is one of these players.
There’s no guarantee that he’ll start. It’s more likely that he won’t, but if this game is close, he’ll definitely come on and make himself a nuisance to some potentially very tired Arsenal defenders after their Champions League game.
Score or Assist
Gabriel Martinelli was unfortunately forced off early in the second half in Arsenal’s last game. His replacement, Leandro Trossard scored the winner and looked sharp with multiple shots and quick linkup play. This season, he’s mostly featured off the bench, but has three goals in six appearances in all competitions.
Martinelli is likely to be out for a few weeks with a hamstring injury. Arsenal aren’t short on attacking options but considering his form, you’d hope that Arteta gives Trossard a chance against Spurs, he deserves it. Last season in 20 appearances with Arsenal, he managed 10 assists and one goal. This season he understands the system better and should hopefully feature more given Arsenals’ busy schedule.
